so elena has struggled with identity from the beginning of season one.
is she the popular cheerleader slash party girl on the weekends, or is
she the gloomy graveyard girl who lost her parents and spends a majority
of her time in graveyards? is she nothing more than a walking blood
bag? is she a monster? who is elena gilbert? a big sister? a loyal
friend? the career decision is very important to her character,
especially because it is telling of what elena wants for her future. the
fact that she choose the doctor route over writing means a lot, because
it is a stable job with a lot of money. it’s security. it’s a
definitive identity, dr. gilbert. it’s a chance to help people and
perhaps prove to herself that she is a good person. maybe an underlining
desire to make up for the horrible things her doctor of a father did.
whereas, writing comes with unpredictability, failure, deadlines, etc.
it means creating multiple identities through characters. it comes with
uncertainty. will her writing be successful? will people know her name like everyone knows j.k. rowling? what will she write about?
she’ll also have to explore multiple personalities over and over again. elena
clearly wants an definitive identity and she wants to do good in the
world. she’s lived with so much uncertainty and lack of stability that
what she wants now is stability and certainty. so, damon’s line about elena being cute
when she’s ‘alldoctorly’ makes for a cute url, but the all doctorly
part just shows how she’s all in. she’s invested in her choice as she
starts this path that is heading towards a stable future, towards a final identity of herself even. she’s come out of everything she’s been through and finally is saying this is me. this is who elena gilbert is.
